What’s NORMal for Fracking? Estimating Total Radioactivity of Produced Fluids

چکیده

Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) found in liquid wastes from hydraulic fracturing are an emerging environmental health concern. The heavily drilled Marcellus Shale, for example, contains isotopes of radium, polonium, and lead. However, the few studies that have focused on NORM in fracking wastewater (produced fluids) have reported on a single element—radium. In this issue of EHP, researchers estimate total reactivity for a mixture of isotopes present in liquid fracking waste from the Marcellus Shale. Decay chains—the series of transformations that radionuclides undergo until a stable isotope is produced—are important in planning for the treatment, management, and disposal of radioactive waste. Longlived radioactive elements (such as 226radium) transform into shorterlived decay products (such as 210lead and 210polonium). Some decay products approach the same radioactivity concentration as the parent radionuclide in a matter of days, while others do so over many decades.

Understanding the Radioactive Ingrowth and Decay of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials in the Environment: An Analysis of Produced Fluids from the Marcellus Shale

BACKGROUND The economic value of unconventional natural gas resources has stimulated rapid globalization of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. However, natural radioactivity found in the large volumes of "produced fluids" generated by these technologies is emerging as an international environmental health concern. Current assessments of the radioactivity concentration in liquid waste...

Estimating Wastewater Impacts from Fracking

Wastewater produced by hydraulic fracturing (" fracking ") for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale is already overwhelming disposal options and will continue to do so as gas development increases, according to newly published research. The investigation did not evaluate environmental consequences of the wastewater. But lead author Brian Lutz, an assistant professor in the Kent State University D...

Determine the most suitable Allometric equations for Estimating Above-ground Biomass of the Juniperus excelsa

Today, modeling and determination of allometric equations of forest trees, especially Junipers trees, are very important for determination of biological status and carbon storage capacity of forest species. The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable allometric equations for estimating the biomass of leaf, sub branch, main branch, trunk, and biomass of total Juniperus excelsa tr...

Estimating radiation dose from building materials

Background: Natural radioactivity in materials under certain conditions can reach the hazardous radiological levels. So, it becomes necessary to study the natural radioactivity in different materials to assess the dose for the population in order to know the health risks and to have a baseline for future changes in the environmental radioactivity due to human activities. Materials and ...

Radioactivity in some sachet drinking water samples produced in Nigeria

Background: Activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 228Ra were measured in some sachet drinking water samples produced in Nigeria. Materials and Methods: The measurement was done by using high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector (Canberra Industries Inc.). The measured activity concentrations for 226Ra (U-series) and 228Ra (Thseries) were used with their ingested dose conversion factors ...
